AI Meets the Classroom: When Do Large Language Models Harm Learning?
Summary
Two lab experiments plus a field study in two graduate programming courses on how AI access affects student learning. On average AI made no difference, but how students used it mattered a lot: asking the AI for solutions covered more topics but built less understanding, asking it for explanations built more understanding, and the field study (where students mostly asked for solutions) showed long-term learning declines.
